This programme, offered by the Department of Italian Language, Literature and Arts in the World, is highly innovative: it is unique in Italy in combining the curricula and learning objectives of two degree classes—Tourism Studies and Food Sciences, Cultures and Policies.
Through this interdisciplinary approach, the programme aims to provide both broad cultural training on the “Made in Italy” sector as a whole and practical, technical skills that enable graduates to work in Italian excellence industries, particularly in the fields of food, gastronomy, and hospitality.
Course Information
- because tourism, gastronomy, and hospitality are key sectors in the Italian economy and there is an increasing need for advanced education and qualifications in these fields
- because Italy is internationally renowned for its typical products, its food, its landscapes, and its network of hospitality structures
- because the programme provides a cultural foundation to promote Made in Italy worldwide
- because the course was developed in collaboration with Confcommercio and Coldiretti, and thus with industry and companies in the sector, ensuring high-quality internships and placements, and greater employment opportunities for graduates
- because the programme offers a wide range of activities (seminars, field trips, workshops) that bridge theoretical knowledge with the worlds of food and tourism
- because, thanks to the acquired skills, MICO graduates will be able either to enter the workforce or to continue their education with master's programmes or second-cycle degrees, allowing them to specialise in various fields related to tourism and food according to their interests and preferences (economics, law, communication, humanities, neuromarketing, health, etc.)
Except in cases of exemption, international students requiring a visa are required to have Italian language proficiency at level B2/CEFR.
The course aims to provide the following knowledge and skills:
- an adequate understanding of the culture and history of Made in Italy
- a solid foundation in basic disciplines—economics, geography, and psychology—applied to tourism, food, and hospitality
- basic knowledge (theoretical, methodological, and technical) required for the analysis of food production systems, gastronomy, and hospitality
- competencies in marketing and communication, aimed at developing the ability to analyze and manage operational tools in the dissemination and promotion of food, tourism products, sectors, and cultures
- the analytical tools necessary to conduct market analysis in tourism and industries related to Made in Italy
- fundamental knowledge for the management of companies in the Made in Italy sector
- extensive and diversified knowledge of the agri-food production sectors and gastronomic sciences
- skills related to certified food production
Graduates will be able to work in the import-export sector for Made in Italy products, and may also be employed in companies operating in tourism, agri-food, and hospitality, undertaking roles in management, marketing, promotion, and communications.

- specialist in the international marketing of Italian-made goods and services
