UMBR-IA – Local journalism in the age of artificial intelligence

SSD: S.S.D. GSPS-06/A Sociology of Cultural and Communication Processes (formerly SPS/08)

Categoria di finanziamento:

National

Durata:

In recent years, journalism has undergone a profound transformation, initially driven by digitalization processes and, more recently, by the emergence of artificial intelligence (AI), which is redefining professional practices, editorial roles, and relationships between the media and the public. In this context, local and small-scale news outlets face new challenges related to economic sustainability, the adoption of technological innovation, and the maintenance of ethical and professional standards. The project, promoted by the University for Foreigners of Perugia in collaboration with the University of Perugia and the Order of Journalists of Umbria, analyzes the impact of artificial intelligence on the regional information ecosystem, with particular attention to Umbrian journalism. The aim is to understand how the introduction of AI and technological hybridization processes influence the quality of information, the professional autonomy of journalists, the social function of local journalism, and the relationship between media and public within the local information space.

Purpose:

The project aims to contribute to the understanding of the transformations that artificial intelligence is introducing into the local information system, by analyzing how such technologies are being integrated into journalistic work and into the organizational processes of newsrooms. The research aims to reconstruct the ways AI is adopted, used, and negotiated in local journalism, analyzing its implications for professional practices, news production models, and the relationship between media and the public. From this perspective, the study intends to offer insights that are useful both to the scientific community and to industry professionals, fostering a dialogue between academic research and journalistic practice on the role of local journalism in the public sphere and on the effects of AI on information quality and professional autonomy.
