The Other Half of the Gaze: The Photojournalists of the Protest

The project aims to analyze the work of Italian female photojournalists who, during the 1970s, participated in the feminist movement by photographing it. Through bibliographic review and field research conducted by combining the study of primary and secondary sources, the research seeks to show not only the contribution these photojournalists made to the history of Italian photojournalism, but also the role they played—through documenting the feminist experience—in the process of women reclaiming their own image. In this way, the project aims to bring to light a largely overlooked body of work and highlight its possible ideological foundations, the specificity of its themes, and the difficulties the photographers faced in being recognized as professionals in the society in which they worked.
