Filippo Sbrana (Milan 1973) is associate professor of Economic History at the University for Foreigners of Perugia, in the Department of International Human and Social Sciences where he is also the delegate for Research, and he has obtained the national scientific qualification as full professor in the same field. He is also Associate Researcher at the Institute of Mediterranean History of the National Research Council (ISEM - CNR),

He is a member of the Academic Board of the PhD course in "Frontiers Sciences in Sustainability, Diplomacy, and International Cooperation” and of the Scientific Committee of the "Diplomacy and International Cooperation" curriculum, 40th cycle, academic year 2024-2025. He is Associate Researcher in the international research project "Deindustrialization and the politics of our time (DEPOT)" funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) with 33 universities and partner organizations in Europe, the USA, and Canada. He is also a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Global Trade, Ethics and Law and of Frontiers in Public Health, and serves on the Scientific Committee of the journals Umbria contemporanea, Perusia, and the series History and Globalization of the Perugia Stranieri University Press.

He was the scientific coordinator of the Luigi Einaudi Institute Foundation for banking, financial and insurance studies.

He collaborates with several newspapers (Sole 24 Ore, La Gazzetta del Mezzogiorno) and periodicals (including the journal il Mulino) on topics of history, economics, and current affairs.

His latest publication is F. Sbrana (ed.), Mezzogiorno: quale storia, quale futuro?, special issue of “Storia economica”, no. 1/2025.

Latest book "Nord contro Sud. La grande frattura dell'Italia repubblicana" (Carocci 2023, 2nd reprint 2025), for which he received the 2024 national Diego Tajani Prize, Mezzogiorno section, and special mentions from the jury at the 2024 Giuseppe Galasso Prize and the 2023 Sele d'oro Prize.

He has been engaged for over twenty years in research activities at universities, foundations, and research centres, both public and private. His studies have so far focused on the North/South divide in Italy, the so-called "northern question", the banking and financial sector, public intervention in the economy, foreign trade, developments related to deindustrialization, and interest representation (workers' unions and employers' organizations). In his publications, he has often explored the connections between economic events and political and social aspects. He has also focused on the careers of significant figures such as Guido Carli and Pasquale Saraceno. He is currently particularly studying the northern question, Southern Italy, and differentiated autonomy; deindustrialization; inequalities; and the international projection of the Italian economy.

He is a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Global Trade, Ethics and Law and of Frontiers in Public Health. He is also a member of the scientific committee of the scientific journals Umbria contemporanea, Perusia and of the History and globalization series of the Perugia Stranieri University Press. He was scientific coordinator of the Luigi Einaudi Institute Foundation for banking, financial and insurance studies.

His studies have so far mainly focused on a few topics: the banking and financial sector, public intervention in the economy, foreign trade, interest representation (workers' unions and employers' representatives), the North/South divide in Italy , the northern question, the events related to deindustrialization. In his publications he has often investigated the connections between economic facts and political and social aspects. He also focused on the careers of some significant figures such as Guido Carli and Pasquale Saraceno. He is currently working on the international projection of the Italian economy, on the northern question and Southern Italy, and on deindustrialization.
