Gallenga Stuart Schunk Fund

The "Gallenga Stuart Schunk Collection" is the result of the generous donation of the family library that Count Romeo Adriano Gallenga Stuart, Senator of the Kingdom of Italy, wished to make to the "Royal Italian University for Foreigners," both as a demonstration of his admiration for this Institution, and because he believed that this vast collection of books, pamphlets, periodicals, autographs, and engravings could be useful to scholars who gathered there from all over the world.

The Collection consists of about 17,000 modern works, dating from 1831 to 1937, and 982 ancient texts; it includes a vast array of English, German, and French literary works, many of which are illustrated and superbly bound, as well as encyclopedias, vocabularies, dictionaries, and general reference works, which constitute essential tools for anyone wishing to conduct research on history, art, or the customs of certain historical periods.

The book collection also comprises a vast array of literature related to Perugia and Umbrian art, among which, in addition to general publications such as Venturi's History of Art, ancient and now rare editions by our Perugian historians—such as Siepi, Vermiglioli, etc.—are worth mentioning.

The Collection also includes the extremely rare and renowned Loeb Classical Library of Greek and Latin classics, of which only two copies exist in Italy. Also noteworthy is the vast collection of printed volumes, miscellanies, and periodicals related to Byron, Henri Beyle Stendhal, and Queen Victoria.

The deed of donation, drawn up on February 14, 1931, and included in the holographic will of May 20, 1931, became effective after the Senator's death, which occurred on January 11, 1938.

On July 9, 1939, during the inauguration of the 14th Academic Year of the "Royal Italian University for Foreigners," the Minister of National Education, Prof. Giuseppe Bottai, delivered the opening address, in memory of the distinguished donor and of the "Library of Senator Count Romeo Adriano Gallenga Stuart," whose size and final placement on the main floor of Palazzo Gallenga the Minister described in detail.

The need to preserve and enhance the library heritage of the "Gallenga Stuart Schunk Collection" gave rise to two closely related Projects, carried out with the important support of the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Perugia:

Project: "Protection, Preservation, and Enhancement of the Gallenga Stuart Book Collection: reorganization, cataloging, and digitization

This project includes the reorganization of the Gallenga Stuart Book Collection, the cataloging of all ancient texts (a total of 982), part of the modern books (6,123), as well as cataloging the periodicals (92 titles).
The cataloging was carried out for the books in the National Library System (SBN) and, for the periodicals, in the National Collective Archive of Periodicals (ACNP).
As part of this project, ancient texts of particular value or rarity were digitized and can be consulted online.

With the support of the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Perugia

The editions from the 16th century number 31, dated between 1517 and 1594.
Among these are first editions and texts that are valuable due to the reputation of the printer and the richness of the woodcuts. Of note are the following works: “Polybii Historiarum” by Polybius, (1522), a prized first edition; “The Riches of the Vernacular Language” by Francesco Alunno, (1543), first edition dedicated to Cardinal Farnese; “Epistles of Pliny” by Pliny, (1548), a rare edition of this collection of letters: its rarity is due to the fact that it was never reprinted; “On the Taming of the Colt” by Biondo Michelangelo, (1549), the first Italian edition on horses and their training; “Dialogue Entitled The Witch” by Pico della Mirandola, (1555), the first book on witchcraft printed in Italian; “The Works of Virgil” by Virgil, (1559), a fine edition with wooden covers, finely inlaid with gold; “Dialogue on True Military Honor” by Jeronimo Urrea, (1569), first Italian edition of this treatise on honor.

There are 58 editions from the 17th century, dated between 1601 and 1696. A significant portion consists of first editions; there are copies of particular interest due to their subject matter; numerous texts feature printer’s marks, mottos, provenance notes, and noteworthy ex libris. Noteworthy works include: “Capricci del Bottaio” by Giovan Battista Gelli (1605), a very rare second edition which, after being included in the first Index of Prohibited Books due to Gelli’s open sympathy for the Lutheran Reformation, was later corrected and reinstated; “De’ Ragguagli di Parnaso” by Traiano Boccalini (1612), original edition of the first publication, in separate centuries, of this notable work by Boccalini; “De’ discorsi politici” by Niccolò Machiavelli (1630), published under the false name Niecollucci, since circulation had been blocked under the author’s real name; “Il Buratto” by Angelico Aprosio (1641), a very rare first edition important for the history of the Marinist controversies; “Instructions for Forreine Travell” by James Howell (1642), the first publication of this work, a valuable edition as it also contains the author's autograph; “Perugia Augusta” by Cesare Crispolti (1648), the original and rare edition of this important history of the city of Perugia; “Chirurgia teorica e pratica” by Pietro Pigreo (1683), a rare edition of this surgical treatise; “Les devoirs des maitres” by Claude Fleury (1688), a unique treatise by Abbot Fleury, confessor to the young King Louis XV, on the duties of masters and servants; “L’espion dans les cours des princes” by Giovanni Paolo Marana (1696), a work that was included in the Index of Prohibited Books and subjected to censorship.

The 18th-century editions number 366, dated between 1700 and 1799. In addition to monographs, there are a number of posters, proclamations, edicts, and ecclesiastical decrees. Noteworthy are: the famous "Collana del Parnaso Italiano," printed by Zatta between 1784 and 1797; the “Siècle de Louis XIV” collection by Voltaire, in the “French Works” section; and the series “The works of Mr. William Shakespeare” (1714), a rare and important nine-volume edition published in the “English Works” section.
Within the “Various Works” section, there is a rare complete collection of the Milanese Enlightenment journal “Il Caffè” (1764-1765).

This section contains works by authors such as Bougeant, Niceron, La Rochefoucauld, Voltaire, De Bourdeille, and Florian. Of particular note is the collection “Siècle de Louis XIV” written by Voltaire; the work consists of volumes bound in full leather with gold-stamped titles on the spine. The collection inaugurates a new genre of historiography: it is the first modern historical work that breaks with the annalistic tradition, illustrating life in all its aspects. Its history is not the usual biographical praise, but rather the history of the institutions, the arts, and the political currents that prevailed in the age of Louis XIV.

This section features the works of the following authors: Shakespeare, Coryat, Johnson.
The series “The works of Mr. William Shakespeare” (1714) is highlighted, a rare and important nine-volume edition with 41 engraved plates of the English writer’s works. Nicholas Rowe, editor of the collection and biographer of Shakespeare, published, between 1709 and 1714, what is perhaps the first critical edition of Shakespeare’s theatrical and poetic works.
The three volumes of “Coryat’s Crudities” are also notable. These were written by Thomas Coryat, an English author known at home for his travel accounts in Europe and Asia, and in Italy as a possible source of information on our country, which William Shakespeare may have drawn upon when writing his plays set in Venice, Padua, and Verona.

This section features works by authors such as Feder, Hagedorn, Haller, Lessing, Ramler, and Zöllner. Of particular note is a first edition of the important translation of Cicero’s “De Officiis,” edited by Christian Garve at the behest of Frederick II of Prussia, to whom the work is dedicated.
The 15-volume series by Johann Friedrich Zöllner, a well-known clergyman and educational reformer, is also included; the aim of the work is “to elevate readers, through contemplation of nature, to the knowledge and adoration of the Divine Creator.”
Also highlighted are the works of Friedrich von Hagedorn, who was the first German poet to bear witness to Germany’s recovery after the Thirty Years’ War.

Project: "Restoration of the damaged volumes belonging to the Gallenga Stuart Book Collection

A considerable number of ancient texts belonging to the Gallenga Stuart Collection, dating from the 15th to the 19th century, showed damage caused by detached covers, the presence of mold, the effects of dust, and wear, which made direct consultation very difficult, if not impossible.
Given the rarity or value of these texts, it was considered necessary to undertake the restoration of the 17 most severely damaged items.
The restoration work, made possible thanks to the launch of this Project, is available online.

With the support of the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Perugia

The list shows photographic images of the volumes before and after restoration and a technical sheet with details of the intervention carried out. For some texts, a link to the digitized copy is available.
The volumes are arranged by year (from oldest to most recent). Among them are also three incunabula, dated 1485-1486.
