RENATURE

Durata:

In view of the Council of Europe Recommendation on learning for the green transition and sustainable development of 16.06.2022, which calls for expanding educational offerings on environmental topics to facilitate the achievement of the objectives set out in the European Green Deal, the "RENATURE" project was conceived precisely with the dual aim of enriching the current educational offer on strategies to combat climate change by introducing specific teaching tools dedicated to the understanding and use of Nature-based Solutions (NbS), and of actively supporting the community green transition by promoting the mainstreaming of these emerging solutions, in light of the strong potential they can offer in the field of equitable and inclusive youth self-employment. Relying on a solid European partnership, the project’s main objective is to design, implement, and consolidate innovative and multidisciplinary educational and training programs aimed at increasing awareness, knowledge, and sensitivity about the effects of climate change in the three dimensions of Sustainable Development among a primary target group, specifically university students involved in vocational training and lifelong learning.
Attività / Fasi del progetto:
The aim is to enrich the educational offer on environmental sustainability through a set of Open Educational Resources (OER) designed to provide final beneficiaries with state-of-the-art knowledge on the different types of NbS, their objectives, fields of application, methods of implementation, and use.
This is intended to simultaneously facilitate the community’s ecological transition by mainstreaming such solutions (horizontal priority: “Environment and fight against climate change”) and to promote youth employment in the ‘green jobs’ sector, giving learners the opportunity to acquire theoretical and practical skills enabling them to carry out specific green professional activities on their own initiative, in a correct, flexible, and results-oriented way (VET priority: “Adapting vocational education and training to labour market needs”). The goal is therefore to foster a fairer and more inclusive bottom-up development of youth self-employment in the green sector.
This is because the main characteristic of NbS is that they are cost-effective and relatively simple to implement and co-manage, being designed to counteract the impacts of climate change even in developing countries, such as those in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Therefore, knowledge of these solutions can be applied in the workplace without the need to invest beforehand in very expensive equipment, and by relying on the support of local policies for co-management funding of common goods from the bottom up, inspired by the principles of CDD and CBNRM.
Risultati attesi:
1. Developing resilience to climate change:
- Study and implement Nature-based Solutions (NbS) to reduce the impacts of climate change in Europe;
- Build the capacity of communities and ecosystems to adapt to extreme climate events (floods, droughts, heatwaves, coastal erosion).
2. Promoting sustainable nature-based technologies:
- Integrate natural and innovative methods into urban, agricultural, and environmental design;
- Provide practical tools to manage natural resources in a sustainable and resilient way.
3. Creating open educational resources:
- Develop teaching materials and open online courses (Open Educational Resources, OER) on NbS and climate resilience;
- Support the training of students, professionals, and policy makers in the field of climate adaptation.
4. Facilitating collaboration and knowledge sharing:
- Create a European network of experts, institutions, and local communities to share experiences and best practices;
- Promote the large-scale adoption of nature-based techniques.
5. Monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of NbS:
- Measure the environmental, social, and economic impacts of the solutions implemented;
- Provide scientific data to improve public policies and territorial plans.
