The PRIN 2026 Call (Projects of Relevant National Interest) has been published, promoted by the Ministry of University and Research (MUR), aimed at funding basic research projects, with the goal of strengthening the national research system and fostering interactions between universities, research institutions, and AFAM institutions.

The program funds three-year projects that, due to their complexity and characteristics, require the collaboration of multiple research units.

The main guiding principles of PRIN 2026 are:

   the promotion of scientific excellence, impact, and efficiency in the execution of the projects;
   support for proposals in all areas of research;
   the adequacy of the financial support guaranteed by MUR.
   The funding allocated to each project ranges from 1,000,000 to 1,200,000 euros.

Project proposals, which must be drafted exclusively in English, must be submitted through the dedicated platform, starting from 3:00 PM on April 17, 2026.

Projects must be submitted by groups consisting of a minimum of four and a maximum of six research units, belonging to different universities or institutions. A share equal to 15% of the available resources is reserved for projects submitted by Principal Investigators under 40 years of age.

The deadline for submitting applications is set at 3:00 PM on June 1, 2026.

Public notice for the submission of research projects aimed at deepening knowledge in Antarctica and obtaining a better understanding of the interaction and connection processes among the different compartments of the Earth system (cryosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere, biosphere, and lithosphere).

The call regulates the procedures for funding research activities aimed at deepening knowledge in Antarctica, and also obtaining a better understanding of the interaction and connection processes among the various compartments of the Earth system (cryosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere, biosphere, and lithosphere). In order to enable suitable comparisons and/or integrations, research activities may also concern areas outside the Antarctic region.
In line with the three-year strategic programming PNRA 2024-2026, research proposals will primarily address the following scientific topics:

• land/ice/climate interactions; Antarctic ocean, lithosphere, and atmosphere
• life in Antarctica; evolution, adaptation, biodiversity, and biocenosis
• astronomy, astrophysics, and space weather
• human impact and environmental contamination
• biomedicine and psychology
• technology in Antarctica

The MUR encourages the submission of broad, coordinated proposals, fostering, in line with the aforementioned strategic programming of the PNRA, international collaboration in polar research and the development of research projects of supranational dimensions and interests, also with the aim of achieving savings and streamlining in the use of infrastructural and logistical support resources. In this perspective, and also in view of participation in the upcoming International Polar Year 2032, the submission of projects that can connect to international initiatives and programs promoted by SCAR (Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research, Home | SCAR) is encouraged, an International Science Council body that coordinates integrated scientific research in Antarctica and provides independent scientific advice to the Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting (ATCM). In addition, the submission of projects that can be part of the international initiative Antarctica InSync is also encouraged.

Topic description

Expected Outcome:

Project results are expected to contribute to all of the following expected outcomes:

• Improved observability, monitoring and control of the electricity distribution grids;
• Optimised management (including maintenance) of the grids by system operators and improved system resilience (including withstanding natural hazards and cybersecurity incidents);
• Grid operators integrate in their practices real-time decision-making. These could be assisted by artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms, if applicable;
• A 'smart substation ecosystem’ is created that includes distribution system operators, technology/solution providers, integrators, application developers etc. This should cover both high-to-medium and medium-to-low voltage levels.

Scope:

Projects are expected to:

• Demonstrate the integration of power electronics, intelligent electronic devices (IEDs), and software solutions in the distribution substations or in their proximity;
• Demonstrate real-time monitoring and analysis of grid conditions (including power quality, voltage levels, grid component monitoring, and overall system performance) that allow operators to quickly identify and address any potential issues or disturbances, help to prevent outages and minimise the impact of service disruptions;
• Consolidate data streams from otherwise dispersed sources to create unified visualisations and consolidated analytics that offer insights into the performance of distributions substations;
• Develop the concept of a flexible and programmable electricity distribution grid in which the substation is a centre of intelligence that facilitates optimal power routing while ensuring the resilience of the electricity grid.

The demonstration, test and validation of the activities should be carried out in at least two pilots in different EU Member States and/or Associated Countries.

The projects should propose a set of best practices and recommendations on effective overarching principles and operational measures for: (i) building smart distribution substations, and (ii) integrating them into a more resilient, intelligent, and responsive distribution grid which is able to tackle disturbances and address net congestion.

Projects are expected to include at least five distribution system operators (DSOs) operating across different geographies and climate conditions. This total number of DSOs per project could be distributed across the different pilots of a particular project.

Additionally, collaboration is encouraged with the following entities:

• at least two suppliers of technologies for smart power substations;
• at least one TSO.

This collaboration (minimum number of entities) is sought per project in total and does not necessarily apply per each pilot in particular.

The selected projects are expected to contribute to the BRIDGE initiative^[1], actively participate in its activities.

Objectives of the Call

General objective: to promote the socio-economic integration of migrant women and improve the support dedicated to them.

Specific objectives:

• Develop targeted support measures for employment and social inclusion
• Adopt a family-based approach to integration
• Strengthen cooperation between local, regional, and national actors
• Support vulnerable migrant women (e.g., those with trauma or low education)
• Disseminate and replicate good practices on a larger scale

Eligible Activities

1. Raising awareness about the rights and job opportunities for migrant women
2. Integrated approaches for inclusion in the labour market and civic integration
3. Mentoring schemes to improve socio-economic integration
4. Activities to increase social, cultural, and political participation
5. Co-design with migrant women or their representative organisations
6. Training and awareness-raising for public service workers
7. Workshops, conferences, and activities for exchanging good practices.

Participation Requirements

• Only legal entities established in the EU are eligible (except Denmark and Hungary)
• Consortium: at least 5 beneficiaries (not affiliates) from 5 different participating Member States
• Key partners: national, regional and local public authorities, employers, trade unions, social economy actors and NGOs, including migrant-led organisations

Target Groups

• Migrant women and girls, with particular attention to mothers and vulnerable individuals
• Migrant men as well, if relevant to the objectives
• Public officials and staff of integration services
