Center for Literary Tourism - TULE

The Center for Literary Tourism is the first university research center established in Europe with the specific aim of focusing on literary tourism.

Connected to the course “Literature, Tourism, and Promotion of the Territory,” which is part of the degree program at the University for Foreigners of Perugia in Made in Italy, Food, and Hospitality (MICO), it was established in December 2021.

It is led by an international scientific committee, with professors and scholars from universities in Italy, Portugal, Spain, France, Switzerland, Germany, and Russia.

As stated in its regulations, the center aims to promote activities and initiatives for scientific research and reflection on literary tourism, serve as a link among the various experiences that have emerged or are emerging in Europe and around the world around the theme of territorial promotion starting from literature, and help connect the academic world with the institutional and economic entities operating within the tourism sector.

The University for Foreigners of Perugia has inaugurated the first European research center on literary tourism, known as TULE, with the aim of studying how travelers discover places through the lens of literature. This new center seeks to fill a continental gap and connect the academic world with the professional tourism sector and local communities. Italy is at the forefront in this field with as many as 33 Literary Parks, and Umbria is developing an important trekking project following Dante’s footsteps between Gubbio and Foligno, a 130 km route. Literary tourism is experiencing strong growth, reflecting a broader interest in cultural tourism, emotional experiences, and sustainability, and the Perugia center aims to add cultural depth to this type of travel.
