The University for Foreigners of Perugia is a small-scale institution that stands out in the Italian academic landscape also thanks to its original institutional mission linked to the Italian language and culture, its strong international focus, and the specificity, broad scope, and multidisciplinary nature of its research activities.

The University promotes and enhances university research as a fundamental tool for the production and dissemination of culture and knowledge. The research activities carried out at the University for Foreigners of Perugia primarily, though not exclusively, focus on humanities and social science disciplines, embracing the sciences, historical, philosophical, pedagogical and psychological sciences, legal sciences, economic and statistical sciences, political and social sciences, and information science engineering.

Multidisciplinarity represents both a challenge and an opportunity for a university like the University for Foreigners of Perugia, which can count on a solid tradition and unique cultural identity, an important network of local partnerships, numerous and established international collaborations, and a wide range of expertise to be integrated synergistically. The small size of the University actually supports a cross-disciplinary approach to research activities, strengthening their effectiveness and impact.

The University promotes the development of high-level, original, and innovative scientific research, based on the integration of the various human sciences, digital technologies, and studies on sustainability in the economic, social, and environmental fields. The quality of research is closely linked to the University's ability to create favorable conditions for the development of scientific activities, enhance results, and promote networks of national and international collaboration, supporting the active participation of faculty members and researchers while also fostering the progressive involvement of students in the culture of scientific research. Freedom and autonomy of research are core, non-negotiable principles, while at the same time encouraging forms of coordination and shared planning at the departmental and university level.

Each department defines, in line with its own Strategic Plan, the directions for research development and promotes initiatives to support projects, participation in competitive calls, internationalization, and the dissemination of results. Data regarding scientific output, participation in projects, collaborations, and the impact of research activities are collected and analyzed systematically, including for external evaluation cycles. Doctoral Programs also represent a key point for research training and for the generational renewal of the scientific community, and they are thus fully integrated into this framework.
