Non-EU citizens

All non-EU citizens who intend to enroll in a course of Italian language and culture must have (even for periods shorter than 90 days) one of the following entry visas: study, diplomatic, work, religious reasons, family reunification.

The visa is issued by the Italian Embassies and Consulates in the foreign student's country of origin. It is not possible for foreigners already in Italy to be issued a visa (or to have it extended).

A residence permit is not required for non-EU citizens with a type C study visa valid for up to 90 days and non-renewable, who have entered Italy from their home country by arriving directly at an Italian airport and have an Italian entry stamp on their passport.

Those who made a stopover in another European country before arriving in Italy must report (within 8 days of their arrival) to the Police Office at the University for Foreigners headquarters to notify their presence in Italy, bringing the following documents: passport, a photocopy of the passport, address in Perugia, and a photograph.

Non-EU citizens holding a type “D” study visa, or “D”+“C”, must fill out an application form (also available at the University Welcome Office), which must be submitted, within 8 days of arrival in Italy, to the relevant Police Headquarters via a Post Office.

The University Welcome Office assists students with the procedures for the issuance of the residence permit.

The following documents must be attached to the application:

  • photocopy of passport
  • photocopy of the certificate certifying the course of study to be attended, endorsed by the Italian Diplomatic or Consular Representation at the time of issuance of the entry visa
  • photocopy of the I.N.A.-Assitalia Insurance Policy or of an insurance policy taken out abroad and validated by the Italian embassy, valid on national territory for the duration of the residence permit against the risk of illness and/or accidents
  • €16.00 stamp duty
  • payment slip for €70.46

Anyone already in Italy for study purposes and holding a residence permit that is about to expire must apply for renewal before its expiration date.
